out of character
I saw a senile old man this morning.
He was sitting alone in the sun, topless, and smiling to himself. You know how we always say that children are the only ones with the most innocent smiles? He had one. He had such an innocent smile that it was impossible not to like him, even though it was obvious that he was senile.
People avoided him, because he was smiling and so fascinated by everything going on around him. To me, he smiled innocently. To others, he could have been smiling insanely.
What we see is not what we think we see.
I was fascinated by him.
I was fascinated by his thoughts.
What was going on in his mind? Was he acting out of character? Did he know he was acting out of character? Was he smiling because he was back in the past? It was obvious; he wasn't living in the present.
Acting out of character.
When we say that, what are we actually saying? Are we saying that there must be more to this man than we choose to know? Or more than he chooses to know about himself?
We are at times, utterly lacking in self-knowledge, I think.
This old man in question didn't have anyone to help him gain self knowledge. He didn't have anyone who could help him see his self-worth, who could help him see to his flaws.
But we do.
There is always someone, who will take away those dark glasses and make you see yourself in the brightest, truest light.
After all, we are always harshest when we judge ourselves.
A little brightness, is always welcome.
You help me see more of myself each day.
I help you see more of yourself each day.
It's a match made for us.
Seek yourself.
Seek others to seek yourself.
